I used the photo of a friend for this painting. I was struck by how timeless it felt even though it is a recent photo.. I lived in New York for several years and always felt that the subway was the best place to take photos.
The light and the sharp angles contrast nicely with the figure. If the figure has an interesting style, well, I can't resist. In this painting I was interested in focusing on the figure. Who is she? Where is she going? Wearing red tells me she is capable. Yet she seems alone and a bit isolated. There is a bleakness to her surroundings, creating a nice narrative.

Colored mirror

The mother and child image is eternal. Having once been an evangelical Christian, this image has a lot of significance for me. The feelings I had as new mother were an intense love, awe, joy, fear, inadequacy and a overwhelming sense of responsibility. I began the painting, focusing on the light and I found myself abstracting the background more and more, abandoning the light to just the figures. The faces were scrubbed out several times and finally left that way. As usual I feel like I was fighting an entity inside the painting, and the entity wins every time.

One of my favorite things to paint is sleeping people. You can enter their world undetected.
I wanted to test acrylics ability to put out a portrait. I am very happy with this one. It has an anime quality which I am super attracted to. Capturing men in vulnerable poses is always a bonus for me. The tender placement of the hands is everything.

Contrast

Does a lily pond always have to be pretty? I was more interested in the contrast in the water and the patterns the reflections and lilies made together. Color seemed to take away from that. I kept erasing the color until I finally gave up and let it be ugly.

The mirror in Bordeaux, France is the perfect place to catch people unaware. I had every intention of putting color on top of this, but I just couldn't do it.

Cinque Terre Unsaturated

In Cinque Terre, Italy everything is so overly colorful. I found a place of escape with these boats making a path, like stepping stones to an uncolorful shore.

Kim likes the rapid drying of Acrylic and the ease it affords to change areas that are not working. Her acrylics resemble her watercolors, light and effortless. The ability to overlay Acrylic is limitless and allows for fearless experimentation. "You can take more risks, without the worry of having to start over." Acrylic has a brighter, more modern palette than oil. The square canvas is also more modern and very appealing to Kim who is always looking for new and fresh ways to express herself. Kim likes to paint the seemingly mundane things around her and bring story into each work.. Her hope is to connect with the viewer on a deeply personal level through her narratives.
